Welcome to the official opening CPHPRW 2019.
|Wednesday the 17th July and Cape Panwa Hotel welcomed VIP’s, supporters and guests to the 16th Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek.|
Rain can’t dampen enthusiasm of opening party
Torrential rain forced the skipper’s briefing and opening ceremonies of the 16th Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek inside, but it surely didn’t dampen the spirits of any of the competitors.
At PRO Simon James’ 5:30pm skipper’s briefing the excitement was palpable, just as if Carly Simon was singing “Anticipation” in the background —the sailors were munching at the bit to get out on the water and get the racing started.

The 2nd weekend of Yacht Racing in Phuket
The rivalries kindled at the Multihull Solutions Regatta, held from July 13-15, will continue over into the 16th CPHPRW, particularly in the Racing Multihull division where Bonza (ex Fugazi) is up against the new Fugazi, helmed by ex-Fugazi owner Dan Fidock. Two Stealth catamarans, Twister 2 and Phantom V (winner of the MSR 19), will compete against each other, both designed by the Asia Catamarans’ team of Alan Cawardine and Roger Diggleman.
And the Firefly 850 Sports One Design will also be fun to watch. Twin Sharks and Voodoo staged an epic battle at the recent Multihull Solutions Regatta. Surf Patrol, Moto Inzi and Blue Nose complete the cast of Fireflies that were designed by Mark Pescott and built by Mark Horwood, both Phuketians.
Four Parties under the stars!!!
The first of four parties opened the regatta and as usual Cape Panwa Hotel’s catering team did not disappoint. A sumptuous and varied buffet saw the sailors dig in and load up on the carbs for tomorrow’s racing. Free-flow drinks and suds were available to wash down all the appetizing food.
Official Opening CPHPRW 2019
The official opening CPHPRW ceremonies were short and sweet as regatta organiser Byron Jones took the stage first. Followed by Phuket vice-governor Mr. Thanyawat Chanpinit, and Cape Panwa Hotel GM Simon Hoekstra. Also attending the event was Khun Kanokkittika Kritwuttikorn, the director of Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Phuket Office as well as the Director of the Sports Authority of Phuket Mr. Virat Patee
World renowned lensman Guy Nowell is the regatta’s principle photographer and Travel News Asia’s Steven Howard has flown in to cover his first CPHPRW. Captain Marty Rijurkis, the oracle of Southeast Asian Yachting, is here to kick off his Asian Yachting Grand Prix (AYGP) for the 2019-2020 season and Duncan Worthington and his capable team at Infinity PR are back again to herd the media in the right direction.
Regatta stakeholders Byron and Rung Jones have spent the last year preparing for the event and have done a tremendous job doing so. The excitement could be bottled and sold on E-Bay. Stay tuned for more updates as the regatta unfolds.
