The shipwreck off the Needles on the Isle of Wight is one of the hazards of any race round the island. Despite its legendary status, it’s a bit of a mystery, and this great little video shows a party of people hunting the wreck and landing on part of the ship’s boiler at low water.
The SS Varvassi was a Greek cargo steamer, which ran aground below the Needles in 1947. Her boilers still lie about 150m west of the lighthouse.
A narrow inner passage between the wreck and Goose Rock is a tempting shortcut for yachts when racing, but nearly every year someone miscalculates it.
